Making Sense of IS with the Cynefin Framework

چکیده
This paper examines aspects of the field of Information Systems (IS) concerned with its diversity and with the rapid changes within the discipline that have been incurred by the continued evolution of the IS artefact. This examination is done in order to establish the suitability of the Cynefin framework, developed for knowledge management, as a suitable tool for sense-making in IS. A description and assessment of the Cynefin framework is provided with its varied applications in both organisational practice and research. The paper then applies the framework to make sense of some historical trends and contemporary issues of IS emphasising their diversity and changing nature. We conclude with speculation on how this approach may help guide future sense-making in IS research. Disciplines Business | Social and Behavioral Sciences Publication Details Hasan, H. The New Dynamics of Strategy sense-making in a complex-complicated world
We challenge the universality of three basic assumptions prevalent (in our view) in organizational decision support and strategy: assumptions of order, of rational choice, and of intentional capability. We describe the Cynefin framework, a sense-making device we have developed to help people make sense of the complexities made visible by the relaxation of these assumptions. The Cynefin framewor...
متن کاملMaking sense in a complex landscape: how the Cynefin Framework from Complex Adaptive Systems Theory can inform health promotion practice.
Health promotion addresses issues from the simple (with well-known cause/effect links) to the highly complex (webs and loops of cause/effect with unpredictable, emergent properties). Yet there is no conceptual framework within its theory base to help identify approaches appropriate to the level of complexity. The default approach favours reductionism--the assumption that reducing a system to it...
متن کاملCynefin, statistics and decision analysis
David Snowden’s Cynefin framework, introduced to articulate discussions of sense-making, knowledge management and organisational learning, also has much to offer discussion of statistical inference and decision analysis. I explore its value, particularly in its ability to help recognise which analytic and modelling methodologies are most likely to offer appropriate support in a given context. T...
متن کاملCynefin as Reference Framework to Facilitate Insight and Decision-Making in Complex Contexts of Biomedical Research
The Cynefin scheme is a concept of knowledge management, originally devised to support decision making in management, but more generally applicable to situations, in which complexity challenges the quality of insight, prediction, and decision. Despite the fact that life itself, and especially the brain and its diseases, are complex to the extent that complexity could be considered their cardina...
متن کاملMaking sense of EFL teacher agency: Insights from an Iran case study
This investigation set out to look into the issue of teachers’ exercise of agency in the Iranian EFL context. More specifically, as part of a larger study, it reports on the ways two Iranian Ministry of Education teachers make sense of and operate in the country’s educational setting under the demands of a centralist system of education. Priestley, Biesta, & Robinson’s (2013) framework of teach...
